Golden Lions Run Past Alcorn

Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored 17 points in the first half as they gained a 10-point decision over the Alcorn State Braves at Jack Spinks Stadium Saturday evening.  John Heflin handled the UAPB kicking duties (42-yard field goal and 2-2 PATs) while Mickey Dean scored on runs of three and two yards in the second period to provide all the scoring for the Golden Lions (1-4, 1-2 SWAC).  The Braves (1-3, 0-2) scored on a Michael Shepherd 71-yard run late in the third quarter.

For the game, Arkansas-Pine Bluff gained 389 total offensive yards (274 rush, 115 pass) while Alcorn State managed 202 yards (178 rush, 24 pass) of offense in the game.  The Braves lost two of the three fumbles committed in the game while suffering an interception.

UAPB’s Tony Joseph had 28 carries for 131 yards to lead all players.  John Pierce completed 8-of-16 passes for 115 yards with one interception.  Myron Jefferson caught five passes for 81 yards.  For Alcorn State, Shepherd finished with 15 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown with one reception for 16 yards.

Defensively, Alcorn State’s Lester Mosley led all players with 14 total tackles (seven solo).  Martin Jackson finished with 10 tackles.  Justin Bass led the Lions with five tackles.
