Band Report

Alcorn State Marching Band is DYN-O-MITE!
9/28/04 by Veronica Baker

In Lorman, MS, the fans made visitors feel welcome in every way as they geared up to host the Alabama State Hornets in Jack Spinks Stadium.  But not only did they have hospitality to offer, the band had much talent to offer as well.

Led onto the field by the drum majors known as the “Fantastic Four”, they opened the game by playing “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner”.  The band kept fans engaged playing Cameo’s “Talking Out the Side of Your Neck” and the universities fight song even thought the Hornets scored a quick fourteen points over the Braves in the first quarter.

During halftime, Alcorn’s band had so much to offer it was hard focusing on any one part of the sections.  The band’s flag corps and majorettes began the routine while the band played the theme from Coming to America and then transitioned for the current Miss ASU to sing If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys.  Later in the performance, the “Golden Girls” performed to Janet Jackson’s latest hit from the Damita Jo album and the twelve ladies were energetic and flexible throughout the entire routine.  The drum majors ended halftime with their own dance routine that got the crowd hyped for the second half of the game.

By default, the Marching Dynomite was the premiere band of the evening because Alabama’s band didn’t show up.  However, if bands don’t show up with their football team, how can audiences see what talent they have to offer away from the home field?  Maybe Alcorn fans can see Alabama’s band the next go round.
